And there... there were an awful lot of answers to that she could give him, there really were. There were ones that she knew he'd believe and ones she wasn't sure he would. There were ones made up of a thousand little lies and ones that were nothing but big, bold lies, coloured in badly.

Vette hadn't even asked why she was here, though she'd asked other questions.

A thousand stories flew through her head.

In the end, though, they were friends. So she told the truth.

"Well, like, oh my gosh," Nina said, looking at him as she reached for the bag to steal some fries. "What a thing to ask!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I might faint--or you might, upon hearing my story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" One hand holding a fry, she raised it to her forehead, looking tragic. "I," Nina declared, in tones of absolute import, "am a spy!!!!!!!!!!! I've been sent here to, like, learn everything about here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And to totally report back to my superiors!!!!!!!!!"

It was easy to tell the truth, when she didn't think he'd believe her anyway. And a little sad.
